Philosophy of Research

Did the great scientists discover all the important things to date? The answer is completely no. Once you start research for a given theme, you will find how the world is unknown and unwritten in textbooks. Number of research topics is obviously much greater than the number of researchers. Then, researchers must have own philosophy in explaining the reason why they study their current topics. The philosophy lies in their personal experience and is to be formed during conduction of research.

Laboratory for Flow Control (LFC) has two very different philosophies dependent on the field of research. One is science of fluids as development of new disciplines around fluid mechanics. The other is engineering for responding to social demands in industry and economy. Group of the science attempts to create new chapters surrounding fluid mechanics using applied optics and ultrasound techniques developed in LFC. Major targets are turbulent flows, multiphase flows, and complex fluids where universal laws have not been found yet. Group of engineering uses their time for solving urgent social demands such as greenhouse gas reduction. Engineering requires achievement of given goals even though theory and law have not been established. This needs jumps of logics and trials of effective ideas in various well-devised experimentations. When the achievement comes up, all the LFC members including science group sparkly enjoy the time to discuss its hidden theoretical background.

LFC thinks that experiment is always a spring of discovery and invention. It is followed by theoretical modeling and numerical simulation before suppling the idea for society. All the LFC members design and construct their own unique experimental device which they think the most important with. During obtaining the results, their personal dream and philosophy are highly respected among the members. This provides diversity of the way of thinking and mutual stimulation among the members in creating further ideas.
